Last night while browsing TV, I watch a bit of American Inventor from ABC. Rather disappointed, feeling the execution killed the idea of the show.
Everything seems too serious in the show. The inventions are serious, the judges are too freaking serious, the inventors are so serious when they were given the chance to get funded, they all addressed a speech with tears.
OK, let’s think about what’s the reason for the show. First, we have to assume we’re not going to see very fairly genius inventions in a realty show, because all of the real good stuffs must either be patented, or be produced. So, we’re talking about a bunch of enthusiastic amateurs want to have some fun and get some money by the way. In this case, those inventions like a word spelling game for kids, a portable mini gym, a football receiver’s training pole, a stuff bear with “character” pillows in it to teach children moral all seem too serious and outsmart here.
Secondary, think about the audience, are they really looking forward to see brilliant inventions in a show like this? I feel quite boring when I see those inventions try to be smart yet it’s not there yet. There’s no such a thing in the show I hit my head and say “Ai-ya, that’s smart” when I saw them. Audience like me probably just wants to have a good laugh. Why are people so serious? Come on, this is not hosted by United Sates Patent and Trademark Office; it’s hosted by ABC. It’s the show business.
There we go. This show’s proposition should be adjusted as “American most silly / funny inventions”. Why can’t Americans just relax a little bit and enjoy some harmless self-denying? Why does everyone try to make things so “functional”? I never believe Americans are so good at solving practical daily problems, and I never believe Americans are so good at engineering. It turns out the show assures my assumption. I think Americans are emotional, which can be really good at stirring up a good funny show.
This show will be way more interesting in Japan (who knows, maybe ABC copies it from Japan). It reminds me Kenji Kawakami, the lord of useless inventions. He always has “solutions” we never know we had. It’s sort of a challenge to our ultimate imagination. How do we know the cat refuses to clean the floor in your house? Try until putting the mop fitted on the cat's claws. Amusement, or, we can even call it art. Want to know more about this guy? Here’re the books you can buy for his ridiculous inventions. Check out this International Chindogu Society as well. Have fun.
Today’s reality shows tend to be too positively functional, help improve people’s lives, become millionaires, have a makeover, or become famous. I’d like to see shows brought down to an approachable human level. Don’t think too hard to get rich, ouch, that hurts my brain.
